Review: Down and Out by Kelley R. Martin

Rating: ★★★★ stars
Date published: September 30th, 2014
Publisher: self published
Synopsis: *Don’t read this book if you don’t like snarky, dominant, tattooed men who say things like “Open your mouth, and I will,” after you tell them to shove it. And don’t read this book if you don’t like sassy, strong-willed, fiercely independent heroines who use phrases like “bossy asshole” as a term of endearment. You have been warned.*

“Tattooed package of sin.”

That’s how Savannah Ryan would describe her new boss, Declan Whitmore, the deliciously tatted and pierced fighter who holds the top spot in Boston’s newest underground fighting organization. She’d also describe him as bossy, arrogant, and—depending on what he does to piss her off that particular day—an asshole.

It’s that aloof attitude, along with Savannah’s witty comebacks and tight little body that land her on his radar. Unfortunately for her, Declan is relentless when he sets his sights on someone, both in and out of the ring. Unfortunately for him, this recently reformed bad girl is trying to go straight after heading down a dangerous path. She’s not going to make this easy for him. In fact, she’s going to make it—and him—very, very hard.

Declan’s not worried, though. He’ll have Savannah come hell or high water, because if there’s one word he’d use to describe her, it’s “MINE.”

What I Thought:

I knew the moment I first heard about this book I was going to read it.  For some reason hunky dudes who are snarky and have an attitude do it for me.  In real life, I like guys who can make me laugh, but I digress.  When I finally got a copy of this book I was very excited, but also a little hesitant.  What happened if all my excitement was for naught?  So the book sat on my e-reader for almost a month before I decided to just go for it.  I was hooked in the first couple of pages and couldn't stop reading.

I read the book in a matter of hours.  I couldn't get enough of Declan and Savannah.  I loved the chemistry they had as well as how were with each other.  I really enjoyed their verbal sparring/foreplay.  I loved the fact Savannah was stubborn and knew what she wanted. Some might label her a "bad girl" but I thought of her as plucky and strong.  Declan on the was stubborn as well. However I loved that his hard exterior masked a man with a wonderful heart.  He was determined to win over Savannah and be the best man in the ring.

There were quite a few moments in the story that caused me to laugh, some that made me grimace, others that made me angry, a few that made me shed tears, and a bunch that made me want to fan myself 'cause the scenes were HAWT!  I think it's safe to say I connected emotionally with this book.  I really didn't want the book to end and I'm very excited to hear Kelley is writing a novella featuring Savannah and Declan and another book featuring Declan's brother.  Now all I have to do is figure out how to wait patiently for them.

About the Author
Kelley lives in East Texas, but she swears it's not all country music and cowboy boots... Okay, some of it is, but not all of it. She's got an amazing husband, who continues to inspire her every day. Even after twelve years and two ridiculously cute little girls.
