A call to action for all readers and book lovers.

I'm not the most eloquent person.  I never quite know what to say that might help alleviate someone's grief or give them a respite from it. I always know my words are inadequate and I'm never quite sure what actions are appropriate either.  One thing I do know is the reading community, both authors and readers, is a kind and giving one.  This past week one member, Jackie Barbosa, an author, lost her teenage son in a car accident.  In an effort to show our support readers, authors, and bloggers are highlighting Jackie's books and writing reviews for them.   Information regarding her many titles can be found on her website: http://www.jackiebarbosa.com/books/ .

There's also been a memorial fund set up in her son's name.  The details of which can be found here. Any and all donation amounts are greatly appreciated and will be used to eventually fund a scholarship in his name. I'm also placing the link to Jackie's Facebook Page here if anyone would like to convey condolences personally or privately.  Please spread the word on facebook, twitter, instagram, word of mouth, any way you can.  Thank you in advance and I hope we somehow manage to help Jackie in this most awful and difficult time.

I've read two of Jackie's historical romance short stories so those are the two I'm going to feature and one her publisher has marked down, but which I have not read yet.  I really enjoyed the ones I read and  I hope you might too.

Title: The Lesson Plan

Synopsis: Despite her imminent debut, Miss Winifred Langston has no interest in trying on expensive ball gowns, learning intricate dance steps, or perfecting the one piece she can play on the pianoforte. Freddie would rather don a pair of breeches and go target shooting, fishing, or horseback riding—astride—than be anywhere near a ballroom or high tea. Rather than waste the last few days of her freedom on such pursuits, she invites her two closest friends to join her in one final caper.

When Conrad Pearce learns of Freddie’s plans, he decides it’s past time to teach his younger brother’s partner-in-crime a well-deserved lesson. But when he intercepts her, disguised as a highwayman, to demonstrate how dangerous and ill-advised her stunts are, he can’t resist the sensual beauty hidden beneath the maddening tomboy’s exterior. What began as one sort of lesson becomes quite another, as Conrad embarks on a comprehensive erotic tutorial of his surprisingly enthusiastic and adept student.

Now, he only has to convince the irrepressible Freddie to trade her breeches and madcap ways for the gowns and domesticity she despises.

My review: This is hot! I thought it was a nice mild mannered historical romance and it turned out to be a "bad" erotic historical romance. But it's a great short story packing a lot of heat!

Title: The Reiver

Synopsis: Duncan Maxwell, laird of Lochmorton Castle, gets the shock of his life when he discovers the reiver captured in a raid on his lands is not a boy, but a young woman. Although she flatly refuses to tell him her name or how she came to be riding with a raiding party, Duncan cannot countenance imprisoning a woman in his dungeon but neither can he release her without compensation. Unable to ransom her back to her family, he treats her as an honored - though exceptionally well-supervised - guest. He takes to calling her Reva and determines to seduce the truth of her identity from her. There’s just one problem - the reiver may steal his heart before he can reveal her secrets.

This story was originally published in the Mammoth Book of Scottish Romance.

My review: This historical romance story is quite entertaining and full of romantic tension. The characters are both strong willed and determined to have things their way. I enjoyed the story, but wished it could have been longer.
